Winter sports season is winding down and gearing up for post season. This year I have three sons wrestling but on two different teams so my husband and I sometimes have to split up for matches. Last weekend was one of those times, and my husband was with my high school son and I was with my two younger boys. Wrestlers have this thing (obsession) about weight. Many of them think that the lower their weight the better their chance of beating the opponent of the exact same weight. Their weight measurement is computed to the .00 and the kids get weighed in the least amount of clothing as possible, most of the time just their boxers. Everyone weighs in about an hour before the match, with an official supervising. This past weekend the high school boys were in the locker room standing in line for the scale and on the other team and in the same line, was a high school girl weighing in to wrestle. She only had on lace panties. In the boys locker room. The high school boys locker room. My husband was texting me this information as I was with my middle school kids at a different tournament. When the 2 boys were with me I wanted to brace them of the possibility for them of such a situation and asked, "You know how in middle school, when your opponent has a full beard?" They said "yea. "
"That's intimidating, right?"
"Well, sort of"
"I think even more of an example of an attempt at intimidation is what just happened on your brothers team. The opposing team had a girl wrestler who weighed in in front of both high school teams in sexy underwear."
The younger boy's eyebrows went up and he replies, "Well...I wouldn't exactly call it intimidation."
"What would you call it?"
"I'll have to think of a better word. Bye."
They could not get away from me and this conversation fast enough.
What would you call it?!
WOW...I really don't even have words for that one. Yet that is too funny that they ran from that conversation! :)

Unfair! If you wrestle a girl and win...you beat a girl. If you lose YOU GOT BEATEN BY A GIRL!!
ReplyDeleteA double grapevine could get a girl pregnant. (ask your boys)
ha. my son played football this year and there was a girl on another team and the boys were shy about hitting her...we had to tell them to treat her like any other player...
ReplyDeleteThere is just something fundamentally wrong with this scenario. What the hell is wrong with the adults in this situation? Allowing a naked girl in a co-ed setting? We've all lost it folks. I'm wanting to home school my kids.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more.
DeleteInteresting post btw, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh my. Wasn't there a girls locker room around? I can't imagine being that girl. Back in my school days, we didn't even want our slip to show. (What's a slip? you ask.)
ReplyDeleteQuestions, questions. Do you think the coach set this up as a distraction? This type of thing could probably be prosecuted successfully, making a girl go in front of boys in her underwear, it is hard to believe! And what about the girl herself? Her feelings.
ReplyDeleteI think the coach should be fired! Whether the girl willingly agreed or not. She was used, and in the most tawdry way. Hopefully someone will bring this to the attention of the proper people. The more I think of it, the worse it gets!!!! Keep us INFORMED!!!
ReplyDeletewow, thats shocking, just shocking!
ReplyDeleteAs a parent I'm pretty appalled. I can tell you that it would not have happened at my kids' Catholic school, no how no way!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's appropriate at all. But I'm sure there they are afraid of lawsuits or bad publicity if they don't let her participate. But it doesn't make it right. Boys, and girls, need to respect each others bodies. And if you allow these boys and girls to wrestle?!? And to treat each other the same....I would be humiliated to watch young men grope this girl. And yes, wrestling gets very intimate with the hands. Wow! I'm stunned thinking about it!!
ReplyDeleteNonny
Good grief- that is wrong on so many different levels. I wonder if the girl's parents were aware. I would have probably blown a gasket...
ReplyDeleteI am quite surprisingly speechless...my first thought was a girl that's wrestling wouldn't look "sexy" is a lacy thong..but then that sounds kind of demeaning and I don't mean it that way...but you know what I mean...boys of that age would be distracted no matter if the girl was tomboy or not...so I kind of fall back onto the coach and ultimately the parents! Some folks in this scenario are a lot tougher than me!
ReplyDeleteTotally inappropriate! Panties are no different than a bikini but the girl should have been weighed in the girl's locker room.
ReplyDeleteWrestling is a crazy sport. My son's weight is finally normal in college. I used to cut a pair of tightty whiteys to practically threads for weigh ins. Inappropriate for the girl to weigh in in front if the boys. I know about the intimidation factor but that is horrible from the coach, girl and parents. There were a few HS girls wrestling but they weighed in privacy. Clubs are different, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI would call it inappropriate.
ReplyDeleteHOLY INAPPROPRIATENESS!!!!!!!! P.S. I would never let my daughter expose herself like this. Sport or no sport, what happened to modesty? Common decency?
ReplyDeletethats crazy!
ReplyDeleteI would call it outright brazenness. What is wrong with the school. There ought to be some sort of dress code for everyone!!! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteHa! More like stimulate and not their wrestling muscles.
ReplyDeleteMy kids and I did Taekwondo and we had all those weigh in's as well BUT the guys were in a separate line from the girls and then one at a time they went into different rooms to be weighed where there was the same two of the sex weighing them. Down to their undies they went all in privacy. Sad there isn't more privacy for your kids.
<><
Annmarie, While as a teenage boy, I might have appreciated seeing a girl dressed only in lace panties, as an adult I have to ask...What the He__!! How could anyone let this scenario occur!!? Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
ReplyDeleteThis is where the "out of touch" me comes into play. My son was a wrestler through out his high school years and I can't imagine the parent backlash that would of hit, had a girl been weighing in in lace panties in the boy's locker room in the early 1990's. Aren't there girl locker rooms?
ReplyDeleteAgreed with the others that say inappropriate. Why wasn't she weighed in the female locker room? That's what they are there for!
ReplyDeleteLOL!! I loved this post!
ReplyDeleteCrazy.
ReplyDeleteI am not opposed to girls having the opportunity to do all sports, but is there not a better way to handle this weigh in situation? Can the girl step into a stall undress then slide the scale under while someone supervises as so the weight is checked fairly? Or maybe the weigh in judges go to the girls locker room or a seperate space or something???
ReplyDeletehey Annmarie! I just happened to read this post out-loud to my husband as I was first reading it. [ which I seldom do ] His comment was, "looks like the other team was working on your teams head."
ReplyDeletelol
Ok, I would say, that girl should at least be wearing a bra. I call foul. That is not at all fair and she can wear a bra to weigh in. Goooood Griefffffffffffff.
Even I am shocked! No bra????? LOL!!! There is SO much wrong with that picture, I don't know where to begin!
ReplyDeleteWhat strikes me as most odd is that a female wrestler would be wearing lace!!! Hehe, I just love what all you have to say!!!!!!
In woman's quest for equality, I think we have gone overboard.
ReplyDeleteoh could we have conversation about this subject. My boys are wrestlers too. We tell our boys if those girls want to get out there then you make sure it hurts as much as would if it were a boy. It really plays mind games with the boys. It is TOTALLY not right.
ReplyDeleteI call it sad...let the girls start a girls' team. For weighing in, they need basic cover up boxer shorts. There is no modesty. This is my opinion. I love young people but there needs to be better rules...anymore people want everything spelled out for them...then they want to go to court..geesh. xo,Susie
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of such a thing as this weigh in procedure. I realize our world has fallen but this is a new low. Someone wasn't thinking. Was this a public school that had the girl on the team? If this was here in my region, I'm sure the news papers would hear of this and the school board.
ReplyDeleteThis was funny indeed LOL
ReplyDeleteYour younger boys will think differently about this soon enough.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I'm not sure whether to laugh or be angry.
ReplyDeleteWhat??? crazy, this world is going crazy, I say!
ReplyDeleteHopefully it would be distracting for them. We have a girl who wrestles on our high school team and they make accomondations for her privacy during weigh ins and she wears lightweight swimsuit like attire.
ReplyDeleteI would call it.....Enough Already!!!!!....That is horrid! I take it that, since she is weighing in, she will be wrestling with them too? That ought to be very interesting and if being intimidated is the only thing that 'comes up', I guess it will be a good thing!....Wow!
ReplyDeletewow you never know what you'll hear next! Where are the girl's parents? I'd have a serious conversation with my daughter.
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked that a high school parent would allow their daughter to weigh in like that or even go into the boys locker room. I would have put my foot down to that one.
ReplyDeletehttp://joycelansky.blogspot.com/2013/01/writers-post-little-things-that-make-me.html
Scary. Or sad. Take your pick. I can't imagine subjecting my daughter to that, or allowing her to do so. No wonder we're all messed up.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable. No way would any of my four daughters done that. And I can't believe the school thought it was okay. And we wonder why the world is the way it is.
ReplyDeleteNo. Way! I really am fearful for our babies.
ReplyDeleteI'd call it crazy....wow!
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable!
ReplyDeleteI honestly think you wanted us to focus on the fact that your younger boys wanted out of the conversation so fast they acted like their behinds were on fire. However, it's very distrubing to say the least that they had that girl weighing in with the boys from both teams in her lace underwear. And we wonder why our kids are getting pregnant in their teens?? That's just down right wrong in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that would happen in high school. Not right.
ReplyDeleteJust when I thought there was nothing else that could floor me, I read this. I don't get it. No wonder kids are messed up. There are no adults in charge anymore.
ReplyDeleteWould you allow your daughter in this situation I do not think so
ReplyDeleteWhat a weird and scary world! Your son's response was pretty funny though...
ReplyDeleteWOW, I am not sure but wouldn't want that to be my Daughter:) Have a blessed day dear friend, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteWow! That's completely inappropriate!
ReplyDeleteWow - that is awful!
ReplyDeleteWinning or losing would be the same for the boys. If they win people would blame them for wrestling against girls. But if they lose please would say that they are not male enough.
ReplyDeleteOne word: interesting! I'm just glad it wasn't my daughter...just sayin'!
ReplyDeleteI'd call that sexually harassing. She should be wearing a swimsuit to weigh in.
ReplyDeleteHi there! I'm going around letting all my followers know that I'm taking a short hiatus from the blogging world due to some personal stuff but I'll be up and running again (hopefully soonish) and I'll do my best to let you know how to find me again (so don't unfollow me until then!). I'm not sure if you're able to email me or not anymore but feel free to try if you want or have any questions. :)
ReplyDeleteWhaaaaT? I'd say something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
ReplyDeleteI'd say this is sad -- sad that our society has fallen to such a low point.
ReplyDeleteIf I were the mother of that girl I would be livid. My son too will avoid those conversations with me at all costs!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Blessings, Joanne
I can't decide if I should laugh or be angry for you!
ReplyDeleteOh boy, I did NOT see that one coming when I started reading this post! It's a different world then when we grew up, for sure. I love that you have an open relationship with your children and you're able to talk about it. I even like that your son was honest with you about the word "intimidation". It probably wasn't what you wanted to hear (not what I would have liked to hear), but it shows that your children trust you.
ReplyDeleteWow...
ReplyDeleteIn one word...inappropriate
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe that the school actually allowed that to happen, but at the same time I couldn't stop smiling imagining your two boys look likes when have to answer your question ha ha...
ReplyDeleteThere are no words.
ReplyDelete'Ridiculous' is the word that jumped to mind.
ReplyDeleteThat is disgusting. I think all the parents of kids on the wrestling team at that high school should lodge a complaint against the coach or whoever told that girl to weigh in with only undies on. Whoever made that decision should be let go.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the girl decided to do that all on her own.
It's a great ploy to get a bye into the next round. I doubt that she was totally naked as many of your commenters seem to think.
ReplyDeleteGirls always mature before boys. Salome springs to mind.
What? eyebrows raised over this one. I got a chuckle that your son exited so quickly LOL
ReplyDeleteLOL..sorry cant help laughing. Certainly brightens up my day. Love how you describe it :p
