When The Mom Gets Purple Glasses
My vision is pretty good. Better than most 50 year old women. I need glasses when I drive at night or when we get nosebleed seating. My 5 years old, 8$ on line prescription glasses broke, finally, they were hanging on by a pin anyway. So yesterday I asked the optician how much money the insurance will pay towards new glasses...he pointed to one single row of plastic frames, out of a wall of frames. It really didn't matter too much to me what they looked like, I would only be wearing them when I drive. The first pair I tried on, the cheapest, but purple, looked OK. Good enough anyway. Took about 30 seconds to decide. While I was waiting for the clerk to place the order I texted my husband and my daughter. She is the art major daughter who probably had that color hair at one time in her life. So I wrote, "I got purple glasses." Well this must have sounded completely radical! They texted back immediately with a host of questions. What? Purple? For you? Are you going to wear them everyday? I guess this must have totally upset the apple cart. I know I am very predictable. I have used the same #24 medium brown hair dye for years, flats never heals, no more than 2 drinks at a time...and this new information was throwing them for a loop. That is just amazing to me, that in this age of immunity to shock, my new purple glasses could be such a shocker!

ReplyDeleteWoot! Trendy grandmother alert :)
ReplyDeleteAi @ Sakura Haruka
Sounds like you need to shake things up a bit more often! Predictable frequently segues into boring and uninteresting. Those are two words you really don't want people to use when they think about you!! You might be amazed at the fun it can bring about!! :)
ReplyDeleteI think purple shows you still got it!!
ReplyDeleteSure sounds like fun to me! Even if you didn't get purple glasses the shock value was a blast!
ReplyDeleteHi Sweetie...
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see a photo of you with those purple glasses. I thought I was bold when I went and changed from metal to black. LOVE them.
Isn't it great when we can still keep them guessing about us?
Have a glorious evening sweet friend, Sherry
LOL That sounds just like me... people would be shocked if I bought purple glasses. Maybe I just should!! ;)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new purple glasses. Wear them with pride. I wear glasses to read and have had pink ones, blues and tiger print.
ReplyDeleteLove and Hugs!
Xenia
I hope we get to see you in those purple glasses!
ReplyDeleteNice to see you!
ReplyDeleteSounds like it's about time for you to give your loved family a good surprise.
They must be pleased to see how cool you look in those purple glasses(^ ^)
Thank you for visiting my blog.
i bet you will look absolutely fabulous with PURPLE (no yelling, just excited!!) glasses. my favorite color. i can't wait. will you give us a picture? (:
ReplyDeleteListen, next time you go shopping text them that you bought red underwear...they will think you are going through a mid-life crisis and won't be able to do enough for you....well, either that or they will start watching you for signs of early dementia~ xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI was going to get earring cuffs once for the upper part of the ear. They were little, not gaudy, but my oldest daughter immediately reacted negatively and I left them at the store without purchasing. Why do we let them pigeonhole us? I usually do that to myself, but when I step out once to do something different the children are appalled! Can you see better with them? Do they match your skin tone? Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThe last thing any kid wants is a parent going all funky on them.
ReplyDeleteWoo Hoo, purple glasses, I love it.
ReplyDeleteMine are red, love them, post a pic!
ReplyDeleteYou are a hipster, and don't even know it!
ReplyDeleteI have purple glasses, too, but with rimless lenses.
ReplyDeleteYay for purple glasses, my mum has some purple glasses :) x
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny...how the kids always just expect that you'll never change. My son was shocked and appalled when I got my hair cut a little shorter last year. Learned my lesson on that one!
ReplyDeleteatta girl, keep em guessing!!!
ReplyDeleteGo for it. I love purple.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I love seeing the reaction of my children when I do the unusual. It really takes so little to get them going.
ReplyDeleteYou wild woman, you!
ReplyDeleteThe natives get restless when Mommy goes rogue.
ReplyDeleteIt never hurts to keep them guessing!
ReplyDeleteNow I really want to see the glasses! I am due for a checkup and might need new glasses, purple sounds good to me, even though I have to wear them all the time!
ReplyDeleteMomof8... Insurance. Vision Insurance! Dental Insurance! Weird concepts. Not something that comes with retirement, that's for sure. Cheap/inexpensive frames R Us. Purple or not, it's good that you were able to save a little money. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
ReplyDeleteI love it! Too funny!
ReplyDeletepurple is cool! it's never too late to try something new :)
ReplyDeleteWhy, purple is pretty! It's fun to do things differently at times and I'm sure those new set of glasses will make you younger.. I chanced upon you from Ms A's site. I'm now a follower. Take care, Farida :)
ReplyDeleteKeep 'em guessing! That's what I say!
ReplyDeleteSo fun to have you show up on my blog! I am following you too now. Purple is definitely a statement of fun!
ReplyDeletePurple is my favorite color. When the day comes that I need glasses, I'm sure I'll have several pairs to go with my moods/outfits. :)
ReplyDeleteHeehee...it's nice to keep everyone on their toes!

You go girl! My last pair of prescription reading glasses were actually a dark purple and no one ever noticed:-( Now they think I'm wild with a blinged out phone.
ReplyDelete*LOL* Imagine the looks on their faces!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteI have purple sun glasses too. I love it, it is hot. You sure look younger than 50 years old with the purple glass.
ReplyDeletePurple glasses sound like so much fun! It's amazing how a bit of color can shake things up!

haahahaaha, that was great post! I love the response from the fam! You can have anything you want. Basically, I think it is a sign of things to come. Now perhaps you'll feel the impulse to buy a red sports car ... or at least red shoes. ~ Renae
ReplyDeleteYou go girl!! I bet they look awesome on you!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL!! Next thing you know you will be getting the red ones too. I think glasses are accessories anymore. It is perfectly OK to get a fun color sometimes. Life is too short to always pick the tortoise brown or classic black. I would love to see a picture of you modeling them.
ReplyDeletexo,
Danielle
You look younger than your age. I'm sure you'd rock with the color Purple :)
ReplyDeleteI think it is absolutely delicious when I, as a mother, can surprise my children.
ReplyDeleteWonderful... a blogger I can relate to! Thank you for visiting my blog! I loved this post... "When I am old I shall wear purple".... and we shall, and we can, and every now and then it's good to upset the applecart! :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is cute. I think it is good to surprise the family once in awhile.
ReplyDeleteYou think purple glasses get a reaction, you should try purple hair. It not only upsets the apple cart it rolls it over and stomps on it. Purple hair was the first adventure I have done on my list because it was so radical for me I about died to have to go new church "shopping" with purple hair. But radical thinking opens up our world to amazing things. So you go girl with your purple glasses! Who knows what is next!
ReplyDeleteYou go girl! You should snap a picture with you and the purple glasses! :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Nicole at Working Kansas Homemaker
Purple is my favorite color...royal you know! Thanks for commenting on my blog. I am following you now, too, and spent several hours last night reading and enjoying what you have written. The Lord is so amazing in the way He moves and draws us together as His body and teaches us that His joy really is our strength, isn't it! <3
ReplyDeletePurple is awesome :)
ReplyDeleteWant to borrow my purple coat that I bought for this past winter? i know, a purple coat... what was I thinking??? Anyway, I like it - isn't that the point? Wear what makes you happy! So there, wear your purple glasses with a smile on your face. At least you can see to drive properly at night (remind them that!) ;)
ReplyDelete-Steph
I have yellow glasses right now...purple sounds great for the next pair!!
ReplyDeleteYou'll certainly stand out in a crowd :-).

ReplyDeleteGood for you! I love purple. :) I am wearing purple eyeshadow as we speak.
ReplyDeleteLol...I'm sure your glasses will look great and will be a conversation piece for your family for a while...I guess they'll be wondering what Mum's going to do next!!
ReplyDeletehaha why not? sometimes it's nice to shock people and show them your unpredictable side ;-)
ReplyDeleteSpanish Pinay
Oh I did smile at this!! It's funny how children see their mum in a certain way, isn't it?! Purple glasses, eh?! Wow! There'll be no stopping you now . Hee Hee!
ReplyDeletehmm...purple is a good color...
ReplyDeleteThere's always a first time. Besides, purple's a hip color, even for moms like you :)
ReplyDeleteKeep them on their toes! Too funny!
ReplyDeleteLOL I love this! Keep them guessing...:)JP
ReplyDeleteWoo Hoo! Purple! I only need reading glasses so I usually hit one of those Reading Glasses to Go places and get a multitude of different kinds to have in my purse, my car, my desk, my computer, by the toilet...I can change up anytime.
ReplyDeleteYou GO GIRL!!!!! I like the idea of purple frames. And you know what? You could do it again real soon...next time they are expected to be near you, make your entrance wearing hot pink stripes and a black and white polka dotted ensemble!!!!
ReplyDeleteMade me think of the poem by Jenny Joseph, "When I am an old Woman, I shall wear purple"!!
ReplyDeletePurle sounds fun! My family is the same way about me...too funny!
ReplyDeleteWell good for you! Embrace those shocking purple glasses!
ReplyDeleteYou just so darn crazy and cutting-edge ;) Apple cart upset, indeed :)
ReplyDeleteHow funny. I love the way they expect us to always be the same.
ReplyDeleteI think your family would be very bored without you:) Thanks for becoming a follower.
ReplyDeleteI turn 50 in Sept, and am due for new glasses. Maybe I'll go for purple too...
ReplyDeleteSomehow I just saw your comment on my blog from back in January. But here I am! Your new follower! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love purple! I think it is awesome that you threw your family for a loop. It is nice to keep them on their toes every now and then. Usually the people that stay the same throw people for the biggest loops. :) Enjoy your new glasses.

ReplyDeleteI was so annoyed about needing glasses and I got crazy ones
ReplyDelete(http://dottybluebird.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/i-can-see-clearly-now.html) but then my family expect a certain amount of "quirkiness" from me.
I think purple glasses sound gorgeous and aren't we meant to wear purple at a certain stage of life? It's good to let your family know you can surprise them!
That's awesome! I got glasses that were a very paisley print and a very different style for me. My husband was shocked and kept telling me how much he liked my new look :)
ReplyDeleteLove that you got purple ones!
Love purple - think it suits everyone!
ReplyDeleteYou go girl!! ;)
ReplyDeletexoxo
I think its good to surprise your family every now and then. :) I've had silver frames since I was 8 years old, maybe I should get purple next!
ReplyDeleteHa, ha. this was precious :-)
ReplyDeleteI think we need to see pics of these new purple glasses :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes ya just gotta shake 'em up! Heeehehehe!

ReplyDeletePurple is my favorite color. I would so wear those :)
ReplyDeleteFollowing back (sorry it took so long ..ah life with 2 littles)
I had a giant pair of purple glasses, pre-kids, but that they've seen, so mine aren't surprised by my in-your-face (on-my-face) color choices. Enjoy the fun!
ReplyDeleteI have a purple pair for sewing I think they look great.
ReplyDeleteLOL...I will have to get me a pair of purple glasses....:)
ReplyDeleteHow funny. Isn't it weird that our kids don't realize that we can occassionally break out of a rut? The next time you see your daughter, have your finger nails painted purlple to match and see if she notices.
ReplyDeleteI think that is G R E A T ! sandie
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I have purple reading glasses and light blue reading glasses...love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute story! Love that you are being a bit daring I bet they look really cool on you! Have a wonderful weekend!! Keep cool!!
ReplyDeleteOh love to see them on you... I go this coming week for new glasses LOL
ReplyDeleteLol, I go for the cheapest too. Glasses can be so expensive and our insurance doesn't cover lenses only exams.
ReplyDeleteOk I wrote about me wearing glasses hanging around my neck but what I didn't mention is that I wear a purple/pink pair of glasses but they are only bought from a cheap store cost me $5........
ReplyDeleteGood for you. A little somethin to throw people once in a while adds a bit of spice to life. LOL :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not shocked at all.
ReplyDeleteOh, I bought purple glasses this time around too. I get lots of compliments on them. If you have to wear glasses....make a statement!
ahahahaha,, i guess not really bad to wear purple glasses.. as long as i have best friend, and she is crazy about purple.. as long as you didnt wear all from top to toe in purple.. :P
ReplyDelete:-)) ..just when they thought, they had you pegged. :-) Good for you.
ReplyDelete~Imelda
Fortunately/unfortunately (take your pick) me selecting purple glasses wouldn't surprise any one I know.
ReplyDeleteHmmm.
