What Happens When You Are Listening to Motivational Tapes While Driving
This past weekend was one of those harried, crazy weekends when everything is scheduled at once. We were constantly running and in different directions, the youngest was sick with strep ...you know those days. So Saturday at 7am I am alone in the car heading for a tournament 1 1/2 hours away...a rare treat actually..to be alone in the car for that long all by myself. I was sorting through my Christian CDs and discovered my sons favorite CD he listened to before college ...The Worlds Greatest Speeches Ever Told. I put the tape in and knew why this is his favorite. It is the actual speeches of famous leaders: Churchill, Martian Luther King Jr, JFK, Ronald Reagan, ...and I realize I am hearing greatness! The passion, the motivation, the inspiration of these speeches is powerful...I am paying attention to the drama of the words with my whole being and just happen to glance in the rear view mirror. Flashing lights are not good to see there. He pulls me over and informs me he was behind me for over a mile with his lights flashing while I was going 90 in a 55 zone. I told him about the speeches but he wasn't interested. He comes back with a ticket and tells me this is an automatic suspension of my licence. I started to cry. He asked me did I ever get a ticket before? I told him once 30 years ago. He said, "OK, your record is clean...schedule a hearing and throw yourself at the mercy of the court..." When I got to my destination everyone was asking me what took me so long...when I told them about the ticket and me going 90 they almost had a heart attack. The one coach put his clipboard down and looked at me and said, "YOU, were going g 90 miles and hour?" No one there seemed interested in the speech tape either. At the end of the tournament, I drove three of my boys home in silence...I knew they would love the tape! Not one kid even mumbled! They just listened to every word...while I drove the speed limit...

Oh my goodness! Those must have been some awesome speeches =) I hope they don't suspend your license!!
ReplyDeleteI think we've all been there with the speeding. That does sound like a great tape/cd to listen to. I would love that.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. This has happened to me! I was listening to an inspiring song on the radio and singing away with my little one in the back seat and pregnant with another one. I didn't realize that I was going over the speed limit (not 90 but pretty fast) and I was trying to explain it all to the cop, but he totally didn't get it. I don't understand how my hubby and dad get pulled over and always get out of it. I get pulled over while I am praising God and singing my heart out and get a ticket :(
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate! And 1 1/2 of alone time in a car is priceless!!!!
Wow thats harsh :( Go to court and hope that the officer dosen't show up. Good luck but also great speeches :)
ReplyDeleteTake care..
I do that most of the time. But at same time my mind is on the road. Simply because i don't want issues with police. They can make hell out of any little thing and I'm not just ready for them. Thanks for sharing your experience with us and i hope next time you be more careful and this is also a lesson for others. Wishing you merry christmas in advance.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago my daughter got a ticket for going 90 in a 65. She threw herself on the court for mercy. They reduced it from criminal to civil speeding with a hefty fine.
ReplyDeleteThanks for following, back at you :)
Oh, my! I'm sorry for you. This is why I switch off the radio whenever it's me driving. Great speech or not, voices and sounds always distract my mind.
ReplyDeleteYou really need to learn how to operate that cruise control! It works like a speed governor and I can attest that it really helps reduce speeding violations.
ReplyDeleteI can testify to what SportsFan is saying -- after ticket upon ticket, I finally started using the cruise control and I tell you, it's my best friend! LOL -I now use it pretty much everywhere I go-even driving my kids to and from school! Great post! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI think some areas must give out more tickets than others, around where I live the cops are always in the same spots and no one ever seems to get tickets :) The speeches must have been very good! Great post, as always :)
ReplyDeleteIts interesting how we really do get carried away when we hear greatness. I for one, love to read books that are written by amazing people, and when I am done I feel a sense of awe and energy akin to what you talk about. The energy that wonderful people give us is truly something. Wonderful writing :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story... I love listening to old speeches, especially MLK, Jr. I had to review it in college and the speech still resonates with me. A very inspiring way to teach your kids, too :-)
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I have to use cruise when I'm singing Gotta ticket once while singing. So I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteAndn I now listen to motivational/parenting tips while driving, on cruise. I guess you learned more than what was on the tapes!
