### Do You Think Math?

I have bad knees. Steps are problematic. As we were discussing where we should meet, my husband said "The first entrance has only 15 steps that would be better than the 20 at the other entrance."
I asked how would he possibly know how many steps there are.
He then asked me, "What do you mean?"
I repeated, "How would you know how many steps there are?"
He said "Everyone knows. "
I asked out loud "Everyone knows how many steps there are? How?"
"By counting them."
"You count the steps?'"
"Everybody counts the steps."
"I don't."
Shock!
"What do you mean?"
"I have never counted steps."
Double shock.
I had another thought."Do you know how many steps are in our house?"
"Of course!  Don't you?'
"No idea."
Could see the confusion now.. in his pale face.
I discovered after 28 years of marriage he counts ceiling tiles too. And scoops of mulch. And the seconds it takes for the elevator. And pillars. And loves mile markers especially. This was all very big news to me. I thought this was one of the craziest things in the world, he thought it was one of the craziest things that I didn't count stuff...he never even imagined that people go through life without counting things. So we took a poll in our house...4 of my kids count steps and tiles and miles and 4 of my kids don't. The other half never considered the other halves habits..and had no idea such people even existed....
Do you count things?

1. I have never counted anything before! I, too, find this crazy! Wow!

2. I know how many stairs are in my house but purely because when my children were little we always counted as we walked...it was how they learnt to count to 13 before they reached 2. Other stuff...I don't know. I think maybe I do count some things...but I'm not sure what....after I had my op I would count steps but then I also timed myself to see how my recovery was going. I definitely don't counts ceiling tiles....I guess different people have different little quirks.

3. O__O i don't count so he's wrong. not everyone counts. haha.. but i think it's cute that he things it's normal though hahaah!

4. Wow, that's a bit obsessive-compulsive!

5. 1. I don't count things
2. I think people that do are very strange
3. WHo cares how many steps to take or tiles in the ceiling
4. I have better things to do with my time
5. I can't believe you took 260 words to tell this story!

But then I'm sure my opinion doesn't count.

Cranky Old Man

6. Not every one counts, but some do, I guess. Some people count yards or even a rough number can be in their mind.A very small minority may be.
Let us not make him feel excluded. Not fitting in is a horrible feeling, and may be we can all count a little so he feels that he is not the only one.

7. I know how many steps are in our stairway, but that's because I often have to navigate them in a pitch-black house and want to do so without falling down and killing myself. Other steps? I have no idea. :)

8. My husband and I are both retired math teachers and we both count things. My husband makes equations out of the time on the digital clock. I make equations to remember an address or a code for disarming the alarm. There are 52 steps in the stairs at our local high school going from the middle campus to the upper campus. We are total math geeks. We speak Algebra in the home. My husband is also hilariously funny (on purpose).

9. Thought this was funny...so sitting here at work with my husband in a different office I just walked in and randomly asked him how many steps we have from the main floor in our house to upstairs...apparently there are 16. Then from the main floor to the basement...again, his answer automatically was 14. Then from garage to house..5.
Guess I married a counter too...lol

10. I don't count, but this fascinates me...I wonder if it lines up with personality profiles. Very interesting.

11. HAHAHA! Sounds completely OCD to me! Funny what we learn about our spouses, even after years of marriage! Never a dull moment ...

12. Oh this is hysterical! I am left handed right brained, yet...I count all the time! Drives me crazy and I have to yell STOP! My hubby is right handed and very anal (banker) and he also counts..he told me he counted in up and down motion which can only be done as you drive over our countryside and count the fence posts and the space between which takes your eyesight up and down..not sure I really understand that one...and I constantly see him touching his fingers to his thumb in cadence and I have to yell at him STOP...just too funny! I have enjoyed every one of your posts since I found you. So glad I did!

13. btw...I have upstairs and basement stairs and no idea how many...I guess I only count my steps as I walk down the street come to think of it.

14. Lol! I'm with you! I don't do math . . .
Cute story!

15. I have to admit I do sometimes - or I count the seconds - lol sandie

16. How fascinating! I don't even count sheep when I'm trying to fall asleep.

17. I have never counted anything except the money given back in change when I make a purchase. I am too old to start counting stairs now. :-)

1. I don't count change!!I know it's awful.

18. Very interesting and humorous. The things we learn about our spouses after living with them for years! I don't count steps or anything unless I have and when I do count, I usually lose count and have to start over. You can bet I'm going to ask my hubby if he is a counter when he gets home tonight. Thanks for this fun post.

19. HAHAHAHAHA! That is so funny. My son a.d I count things but my wife and oldest daughter don't.

Encouraging Thoughts for Life

20. I don't count, but my husband does. Furthermore, his brain automatically creates math problems wherever he looks. Not only would he count 28 steps on a staircase, he would also add the digits together until he got a single digit number (2+8=10 and 1+0=1). I have no idea what use that is, but he does stuff like that all the time.

21. Yes, I'm a counter!!! I have bad knees and need surgery, so I have always counted steps and their height. I count ceiling tiles and chairs in public places. It's kind of a zoning out relaxing thing to do.

22. Oh yes!
Jane x

23. I think I once tried to count the holes in a ceiling tile in a doctors office because there was nothing else To do. Enjoyed your blog though!

24. only if I'm trying to remember where i'm going like how many doors down a hall or roads before a turn

25. My husband is an engineer, and he and all his partners are always counting and measuring everything. There is hardly a day that goes by that he doesn't ask me how much, how many, how wide, what's the differential, how's your car doing on gas mileage these days... and on an on. I have an analytical mind and have supported myself well with it, but I really don't give a rip about the answers to those crazy questions of his. Hah!

26. I definitely do not count things on my own- but do often count things like steps as I am counting with my kids.

27. Hahaha, awesome! I count things sometimes but definitely not all the time.

28. There are people out there who DON'T count things?

29. I don't count everything only the important things that matter :-).

30. LOL...goes to show we never know everything about someone else. I do not count either. :)

31. This is hysterical and I honestly never thought about it as I am not a counter. I have got to take a family poll and see if we have any counters.

32. I count my blessings, but hardly ever steps. I have no idea how many steps there are in my house. I am curious now so maybe I will count them just so I know.

Danielle

33. I count how many times I roll around the toilet paper!

Visiting from Exposure 99% Weekday Blog Hop.

PS: We have the same background.....

34. I also add up the total of cars number plates and 800 numbers!

35. haha...i dont count steps...maybe ceiling tiles but only in boring meetings...i am not a counter...

36. It depends. I count how many times in a day I think about finding a great man to get remarried too. Does that count?

37. I don't count steps. I'm a random chaotic!! I don't suit my cards when i play cards. I was aware that some people count. I think it's subconscious.

38. Well, in my house, I don't count, and when I read this to my hubby, he said, I count...don't you? And, there you have it! Amazingly enough, I think it takes both of us "kinds" to populate the world...this was enlightening!

39. Absolutely count. Steps, trees in a line, mile markers. Sometimes I even count the yellow dashes on the road.

40. Usually the only thing I count is my kids when I'm out in a store or other public place..."there's kids #1, #2...ok where's #3?"

41. I'm always counting, I can walk around university and know how many steps I have to walk up if I walk a certain way. When I was a kid we had a concrete block house and I use to count the blocks in my bedroom. I love that you just learnt that about your husband and kids :)

42. LOL I guess I have never really thought about it. I think I do a little counting, somethings here and there. But not too much! :)

43. That is really interesting. I count stuff, and so does my two-year old.

44. I think there are time when I count things, but I don't think I realized it until now!

45. Wow, I never thought about this. I don't think I do, but I suppose it's possible that I've counted things but just haven't noticed. I'll have to pay attention next time. I may or may not be part of the counting club :)

46. Gosh no! I've never counted anything like that!

47. I've never counted steps except when I climbed to the top of a very tall lighthouse.

48. Like Dana, I know the number of steps in our house, but otherwise, don't pay much attention. I would think non-counters are more relaxed in general, but I could be wrong. :-)

49. The question is not do I count the steps, but could I possibly remember how many there are after I am done counting? The answer would be no.

50. I totally count EVERYTHING!! And I watch the time --numbers, numbers, numbers... but I am HORRIBLE at actual math!!! lol!!

51. And I thought I was OCD. I used to count the amount of razor swipes to shave my legs and HAD to make sure I did the same amount on the other leg, or I didn't feel even. I'm not as anal about it anymore, thank goodness.

52. No I do not count however I did count some stairs in London on the Underground because I couldn't believe I had to climb them!!!

53. LOL! I'm guilty! I'm definitely a counter too!

54. haha. this is one funny post! now i know i am not alone coz i count things too! :) lol

55. just my kids when I am out and about. so far...my count remains perfect. they are all safely home and in bed. where they will hopefully remain until at least 7 am. and soon it's my turn....wait!
I count zzzzzzz's!

56. I'm not much of a counter as much as I am the kind of person that looks for objects inside of things. (Sorta like shapes in clouds.) One day, I thought I saw Jesus on the bathroom floor.) Thank you for being my new follower. I'm your new follower too.

57. Funny, I count the tiles and steps too.

58. I count the stairs in my house - I've had a couple of falls in the dark so I count them if I go down in the middle of the night. Just to make sure. The times I count other things, though, depends on how bored I am.

59. I know i don't count will have to ask the outer two.

60. Interesting. I don't count things, but know people that do.
Annmarie, I wanted to let you know that I have nominated you for an award. The Food Stories Award for Excellence in Storytelling. Check out the site: (http://foodstoriesblog.com/food-stories-award/). Feel free to decline if you don't want to join in.

61. I count occasionally...I'm not sure why...mostly no counts. But I do think math...practical every day math.

62. It's people who count.

God bless.

63. hmm...well I only count the hours I sleep...because I have found it useful in work...when I feel down...I readily count how many hours I slept last night....and if they are enough...it refreshed.

hmm...I heard it first time too...I will ask my beloved husband today....

64. Really interesting. At my house, my husband and my elder girl count the steps, my younger girl and me don't count steps. So, I think those who count are a very detail person.

65. Yes, I count things, and quite often drive myself mad doing so! I also have a habit of doing things by numbers, for example, I will pick up six things and then I will do something I like better, or iron twenty things and then go on to something I like. I better stop there, I am sounding crazier by the second!

66. I don't think I count things, but have a good visual memory so I see & remember all kind of small things :)

67. I only start counting tiles or such things when I'm bored. It's funny that after 28 years of marriage, you can still learn new things about your husband.

68. I'm an accountant, so it's my job to count. I've noticed Mister Three counting the stripes of the zebra pedestrian crossings. I don't count steps, but I do count seconds waiting at traffic lights to fill in the time.
The one time I did count steps was when my oldest was a baby. She had painful reflux so there was lots of pacing up and down to settle a screaming baby for hours on end. I could tell you exactly how many steps it is from one end of the hallway to the other.

1. Its the counting habit which increases our learning power and also our numerical ability. It can seriously helps the people to understand the math logic and formulas.

69. lol...no I don't count steps or anything like that :)

70. Lol...I have bad knees too. Steps also hurt like the dickens. Maybe we don't count them because we look at them and are to busy thinking, Please Dear God help me get up/down these babies!!!! Katie

71. I was going to say it's a man thing but probably it's just the type of mind you have and the way you think, I don't think I count steps but I have a very enquiring mind and like to know how things work! Very interesting post though, certainly makes you think!! Following you now x
P.S. My knees can be a bit dodgy sometimes!

72. we are constantly learning and discovering each other. come check out something i wrote on leg health recently. you might find it interesting.
cheers ;)

73. My dear niece has OCD, constantly counting.

74. I think it's a male thing

75. How funny. My daughter and I were just discussing this the other day. We saw a little boy walking and counting floor tiles as he went along in Target. It reminded us both of ourselves. I used to lie on the church pew each week as a small child and count the small wood planks that made up the expansive ceiling and also I used to try and count the dots that made up the ceiling of the cars back in the 60's (remember those?) as I lie in the back window ledge (before seatbelts were mandatory- not sure the car even had them), a running total of linoleum tiles in school, etc. OCD, perhaps. Futile for sure, because all that counting didn't help me become any good in math!

Liz

76. I COUNT ALL THE TIME!!!! I count steps( yes, I know exactly how many I have in my house) At the dentist's office, I count ceiling tiles, etc. I also teach math. I'm sure it has to do with how we're wired. I don't think it's OCD. I totally get your husband.

1. If you teach math, I have much admiration for you! I taught English for years, but when I had students come to me for help with their math during my study hall stint, I had to defer to another student who was good at math. I barely made it through Algebra 1 in HS!

2. haha, I completely understand. I have teachers tell me all the time they can't do math. It looks scarier than it seems and much easier yet when you teach it to kids. Makes you understand the connections even better. :-) What grades did you teach?

77. haha funny but I count things too. But the steps only on our stairs! =)

78. That's so funny! I think I'm a counter - but not all the time!! Love your blog - thanks for following me and I'm so excited to follow you back :)
Mary x

79. Yes, Yes- I am one of those. I always count steps. It's an addiction, I think! lol And here I thought I was the only weirdo in the world-glad to see I am not alone- xo Diana

80. LOL - I love you can be married to someone for so long and still learn new things about each other.
Hm... Do I count? I count things when I'm bored. That's about it. I do know how many steps we have b/c I count them as the kids go down holding my hand.

81. I do count a lot of things. I have since I was old enough to count. I don't know why, though-

82. I am also a counter, but not for everything. I count steps, how long it takes me to unload the dishwasher, folding laundry, just really when I'm bored, I start counting. I always thought it was an odd habit, but glad to see I am not the only one who does it!

83. I know that my stairs has 17 steps, the stairways at the school where I taught each had 16 steps from landing to landing. And, it's 6 steps from my bed to the bathroom. Otherwise, NO, I try to think "math" as little as possible!(except for balancing my check book. For that I border on paranoia.) LOL!

84. Wonderful post and I'm with you!!! Only count rhythm when playing the piano.

85. I know my house has 13 steps which I count coming downstairs at 2am to let the dog out because its dark and I am blind without glasses.

Otherwise, I don't do math- thinking or otherwise. When the kids ask me a math question, I direct them to their to geek dad. :-)

Great post!

86. Very interesting...Hmm. I don't count steps but I count tiles and other things only when in Dr. waiting rooms or when our pastor goes off track and we need to be singing the last hymn.

Have a lovely weekend. xo

87. LOL I think that is so cute! A Husband who has a brain for math! have a wonderful day sis!

88. No I don't think Math. It gives me hives. I'm allergic to it.

Hehe. What an interesting discovery after so many years. I'm gona ask my hubby if he counts.

Cute post.

89. It's a man thing!! I don't count things but, my husband sure does!

1. I agree!!!! You are absolutely right!!!!

90. I don't like math, and I don't count things....except maybe how many seconds it takes the elevator to get to my floor (at work) on Fridays!!

91. Annmarie, I don't generally count the things around me. I will count a particularly long series of stairs from time to time...just out of curiousity. I've been known to count ceiling tiles or specific ceiling or wall decorations when I'm stuck somewhere in a waiting room. One grandson is complusive like your husband...and the other couldn't be bothered with the little details. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

92. Cool Blog, but all those followers and comments is scary so I will go and hide again for now. But keep up the good work.

93. I love that everyone is so different. I count- but I don't keep track. I have no idea how many steps are in my house- but I count them often as I walk up them. Maybe I should just stop...

~Jess

94. Um....nope.....never even thought of it!

=)

95. Occasionally I do count things but not often and I have no idea how many steps there are anywhere unless you count the one step in front of my house :)

96. Hey there! thanks for visiting my blog, I'm following u know too! It goes to show that no matter how long you've been together you always learn something new about your significant other! Have a great day! :)

97. haha i can so identify with counting--i count my deodorant strokes and many other everyday things--i can't believe everyone doesn't ;)

98. I don't and am glad to find out I'm not alone... I have no idea how many steps we have in our home. I'll have to ask my family - now I'm curious!

99. I don't and am glad to find out I'm not alone... I have no idea how many steps we have in our home. I'll have to ask my family - now I'm curious!

100. I DO count, but not as much as my mother. My psychologist daughter says it is an OCD thing. I'm ok with that. :)

And actually Monk (TV character) is my hero (he loves order and counts) except I don't touch everything nor am I afraid of milk.

Glad to be here! thanks for stopping by.

Teresa

101. I count as well.

102. Thank for stopping by my blog - I am now following your back I I look forward to popping back soon!

103. Hey thanks for following fitness2love!!! Bty I deffinetly count things I enjoy math. :)

104. I use to count anything countable and got to the point it was driving me bonkers! I was told it was an OCD and went to therapy to learn how to turn it off. Haven't counted anything more since 2001!

105. Everyone has their funny quirks! I have to eat things in even numbers. :-)

106. Thanks for stopping by, it's always a pleasure to meet a new a new blogging buddy.

No, I do not count things, well, not as you described anyway. How funny! Like someone else said, we all have our quirks!

Blessings!

107. Whoa..that's terrific..I never count even the steps in my house. He is good, is a keeper :-)

108. I don't count steps but I love those mile markers when I'm driving. It entirely entertains me. I'm a new follower and likely nearly your neighbor. I live in LD school district.

109. I count as well... That's why my son learnt counting (in French and in English) at 18 months old. I was counting steps with him lol I thought that I was crazy but it seems i'm not the only one ;)

110. that's hilarious! sometimes i find myself counting steps without intending to do so. i think if i have a long way to walk, it helps the trek go by more quickly. :)

111. Never even thought of counting! Never knew that anybody does. Now I need to take a poll in my family too!

112. Not usually, but sometimes. I have no idea how many are in or outside of my house. I'd be likelier to count something that seemed unusual - if I was on a huge flight of stairs, I might count to see how many steps I was taking!

113. It's rare that I count things unless I'm getting in line to make a return or counting how many parties are ahead of us for a table at a restaurant. Funny how after 28 years you are still learning about one another. :)

114. Total counter. Clothespins. Dishes. Steps. I think it's an OCD thing.

115. Excellent Articles writing Dear Friend Nice Information Share all over the world. am really impress your work Stay Blessings On your Work...God Bless You.

116. I am not surprised. I count the ceiling tiles in the doctor's office/waiting rooms and even the floor tiles. I am super bored and it keeps my brain from going completely flat.

117. not a counter myself but that is a very interesting thing to think about. will have to ask my hubby tonight ;)

118. That is fascinating!! Ha! I guess I'm a counter (I thought everyone did this too...heee)
xoxo,
- Irina

119. I most definitely do NOT count things....loved the article as like you, I never imagined that some people spend time counting everyday things!

120. So cool! I think that autistic children like to do this as well. Maybe he has a touch. I think that things like that just make someone very interesting and shows how brilliant that they are. I don't count things like that, but enjoy it when I see people who do that. coem by and see me again I love having your comments. I'm sorry I have been out of it lately. I've been trying to get organized. I have a free e-book for you to see.

121. My husband is a counter; I think it's at least partly due to the fact that he's a firefighter because he always counts things like steps to the nearest exit, doors in a hotel hallway, etc. I never count anything, except maybe groceries if I want to use the express line.

122. Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog and of course following you back now. I have a FAB giveaway on my blog now. Come visit and join doll.

123. Oh Annmarie !
It's funny because i count them but DO NOT remember what i counted :)

124. Hi, I'm Amanda and I'm a counter. How have you never counted your stairs?

125. Your husband must be like McGiver. I'm sure that McGiver would have counted steps. As for me I count the seconds on the Microwave until it beeps and I can take out whatever is in it. JB

1. Yes! I have 16, you have to understand this is life saving info for a clutz with full hands!

126. Too funny! I'm with you. I never count anything!

127. i always count things and when i was a kid i even had problems leaving a place without being finished with it. i also look exactly 10 times if doors are closed, everything in my flat is turned off before i leave *laughs at herself*...

128. I counted the steps to the top of Telegraph Hill once, because there are a lot of them and I just wanted to know. Otherwise, I don't count stuff because I can't remember numbers. Random facts from random bookes--yes I do remember them. Numbers, never. I think it has to to with how our brains are wired--logical or whimisically creative.

Just out of curiosity...does your husband line things up in "straight lines and right angles?"

129. Oh my goodness! I am not a counter either-if it involves numbers, I'm not that interested! Our middle son once told me that he finds himself "adding" numbers togther. For example, on the radio 103.5=9. He is a mechanical engineer and a very methodical thinker. Is your hubs an engineer, too? Off to count our stairs!

130. Too Funny...I love it! Now following you and thanks for following me...I will enjoy your blog!

Beth art from the heart following through GFC as lucyatmax

Thanks a bunch! Beth

131. yep, i'm a counter... our victorian house had 45 steps one way from the sidewalk to our bedroom.

132. Is it okay to be in the middle?
Sometimes I count;
sometimes I don't.

133. LOL! I don't count steps habitually, but I do know there are 14 steps in my house to go upstairs. I *always* know how many are in our homes (we are army and move often) because at night, when I go to bed, I will walk upstairs in the dark, with all the lights off. I count the stairs as I walk, so I know when I have reached the top. :) I learned to do this the hard way. You can use your imagination.

134. This is hysterical!!! I am with you- I never count anything:)

135. My name is Susan and I am a counter. I count telephone poles, buttons on people's shirts, cars that pass by and many other useless things.

136. Too funny..I'm a counter but I never even thought to ask my husband if he was! I'm afraid if I ask him he'll think I'm crazy (he already knows how methodic, planned, organized...and anal I am! lol!

137. That's funny!!! Proves you never really know a person....you just keep learning! :) I don't count either. I've only counted the steps in my house when we were movong in when my muscles were burning in agony. ;)

138. Funny. :) I count steps too! I'll have to ask my hubby. LOL
New follower. :)

139. I'm not a counter either and I love the fact that you are just finding this out. So funny.

140. You are your four are definitely not alone. I don't count either. I never would have thought! Ha!

141. I count pretty much everything. All sorts of people. :)

142. This comment has been removed by the author.

143. I made a mistake so back to try again. Sorry about that.

The only thing I count is when I get change back at the store or how much money my hubby hands me extra to spend on myself some days. Other then that definitely not a counter of stairs or planes flying in the air or stars in the sky at night or cracks in the sidewalks.

As a kid I used to count how many candies Judy got more then I . Yet my Mom gave the same. The kid in me back then. Ha,ha.

144. I do tend to count things. I like numbers tho.

My Aunt was not good with directions. When she came to visit she would count signs till the next turn. Needless to say sometimes she never made it on her own.

145. What a great post! I count things too! I like to tell myself it's because my mind doesn't like to be idle (maybe a bit of truth to it?), but it's nice to know I'm not the only one! I also sometimes count pieces of silverware as I wash them.

146. OMGosh,
I never thought about it. I think this sentence is hilarious:we took a poll in our house...4 of my kids count steps and tiles and miles and 4 of my kids don't. The other half never considered the other halves habits..and had no idea such people even existed....
I can't imagine turning the question into a blog post. Bt then - why not. I am following you now.

147. I also think that is quite weird. I have never thought of counting the steps in our house.
